Northern Health’s community woven in time
On Tuesday, 26 March, the Hon. Heidi Victoria MP, Victorian Minister for the Arts unveiled North Facing, a tapestry donated to Northern Health which will be on permanent display at The Northern Hospital.
The event was also attended by Mr Ted & Mrs Robyn Baillieu, Alexander Robertson, OAM, Mark Robertson, OAM and Anne Robertson, local members of parliament, members of the Australian Tapestry Workshop Board and Northern Health Executive Directors, Board members and staff.
Students from St Monica’s College played some beautiful music to set the mood as people gathered in anticipation for the official unveiling of the tapestry. The stunning tapestry represents the northern suburbs’ continued progress and will be enjoyed by patients, visitors and staff for many years to come.
As patients and visitors enter The Northern Hospital, the tapestry’s vibrant colours and intricate detail will provide a sense of welcome and comfort in a potentially difficult time.
Commissioned by Hotel Care, the charitable arm of the Australian Hotels Association, Mr Alexander Robertson OAM, Anne and Mark Robertson OAM, the Australian Tapestry Workshop creation measures 1.6 metres by 4.25 metres with more than 900 hours invested in its weaving.
The Robertson family’s generous contributions to Northern Health have helped patients in our community for over a decade.
Tapestry artist Bern Emmerichs hails from the northern suburbs and used her knowledge, understanding and personal connection to the community for inspiration. The skilful hands of weavers Sue Batten and Emma Sulzer brought the design into reality.
Ms Emmerichs saidthe inspiration for her design was reached by integrating her ideas of the northern suburbs’ diverse community and its cultural and environmental history to create a visual timeline of the area. It was also important the tapestry’s design was practical in regards to its feature location in The Northern Hospital.
We welcome this stunning work of art to the front foyer of The Northern Hospital and encourage all staff to take the time to visit this beautiful tapestry
