Leaving a Life Legacy: John Chenery's generous bequest to Northern Health's Respiratory Department

At Northern Health Foundation, we are often reminded that some of the most powerful contributions come not only during a person’s lifetime, but also through the legacy they leave behind.

The late John Chenery was one such individual whose generosity will have a lasting impact on countless patients for years to come. A former patient at Northern Health, John made the decision to include a bequest to our Foundation in his Will; a meaningful gesture that has directly supported the purchase of a new Elastography Ultrasound for Northern Health’s respiratory department.

This advanced ultrasound technology (elastography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound), is already enhancing the ability of our Pleural Medicine Unit, Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine to diagnose and monitor pleural disease with much greater accuracy. For people with pleural diseases, this means earlier and more precise interventions, fewer invasive tests, and better outcomes.

Dr Sanjeevan Muruganandan, Respiratory and Sleep Physician, says “by improving the way we image and understand pleural disease, we can offer more personalised care and help patients spend less time in hospital and more time at home.”

John’s bequest is a powerful reminder of how legacy gifts can drive real change in healthcare. These gifts allow us to go beyond the basics, enabling the purchase of cutting-edge equipment, the development of new services, and the delivery of care that is not just good, but exceptional.

Every bequest, no matter the size, reflects deep care for the future of our community. It’s a way to continue supporting the causes that matter most, leaving a footprint that extends far beyond one lifetime.

“We are deeply grateful for John’s generosity.  John’s bequest has equipped our Pleural Medicine Unit with world-class ultrasound technology. His generosity will drive innovation and transform how we care for people with pleural disease well into the future.” Says Dr. Sanjeevan.
